Gag Cartooning with Jessica Campbell (Online via Zoom)

4:30pm – 5:30pm Pacific Time

The comics we first encounter in the world are often funny: gag panels, newspaper strips, children’s comic books. Humor is so fundamental to the origin of the medium and is incorporated in its name. In this class, you’ll participate in a fast-paced exercise to develop ideas for funny gag cartoons, which you will see through to completion. From generating an idea to drawing to producing a finished work, this will give you a crash course in cartooning.

ABOUT JESSICA: Jessica Campbell is an interdisciplinary artist who is interested in how combining seemingly disparate media, subject matter and tone can be a tool for research and the production of knowledge. Her visual art has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the world. She is the author of three graphic novels, including Rave (Drawn & Quarterly, 2022), and is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art at Saint Norbert College (De Pere, WI).

Intro to Diary Comics: How to Abandon Perfection and Draw Every Day with Alyssa Hirose (Online via Zoom)

7pm – 8pm Pacific Time

Diary comics are exactly what they sound like: it’s keeping a journal, but with pictures. The key to drawing every day isn’t an endless stream of great ideas or extraordinary artistic talent. It’s abandoning perfection and just doing it—making art that is honest and silly and sometimes, bad. In this workshop, you’ll learn techniques for drawing every day, and how to turn your own experiences into comics, consistently. You’ll discover all the little stories your life is made up of. You’ll come away with resources for inspiration and tools for making it happen, and the first of what could be many comics to come.

ABOUT ALYSSA: Alyssa Hirose is a Vancouver-based artist who has been drawing diary comics under the Instagram handle @hialyssacomics for four years—actually, her official 4th comic-iversary is during the VanCAF 2022 festival! That’s 1400+ comics that document all her ups and downs and sideways spirals. Alyssa is a graduate of UBC’s Creative Writing program, and she’s also a magazine editor, freelance writer and improv comedian. Yikes, that’s a lot of creative outlets when you write ’em all down. Everything is fine!

WITH REGARDS TO COVID-19: Because this workshop takes place in a city-owned, public building, we must follow facilities regulations when it comes to COVID-19 precautions. This means we cannot enforce the wearing of masks or check for vaccine passports. All VanCAF Staff and Volunteers will be wearing masks and require a valid vaccine passport. However, we greatly encourage the use of masks when attending this workshop and we will provide a mask if you would like one. We want everyone to be as safe as possible and we thank you in advance for keeping others safe. The number of people in the workshop is greatly reduced to provide more space between participants, and a door to the outside will be open to increase ventilation. We realize that not everyone will be comfortable taking in-person workshops, which is totally cool! We have two online workshops that are going to be really awesome and we encourage you to check them out. Please stay home if you have any symptoms of illness.
