 Hacks for Drawing Clothing and Fabric with Janice Liu

12:30pm – 1:30pm Pacific Time in Room A at the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre.

Do you have trouble drawing clothing folds? Want to be able to quickly draw clothing in different poses in your comic without constantly looking up fabric references? Janice Liu will share her easy-to-follow system for adding believable creases to your fabric! A printout of a character base will be provided for you draw over, and we’ll walk through beginner-friendly methods of sketching several types of clothing.

About Janice

Janice Liu is a children’s comic artist based in Burnaby, BC and the owner of the children’s art school, Young Artists’ Place. She has been teaching art since 2013, and has enjoyed bringing art programs to Burnaby Public Library, Surrey Public Library, Place des Arts, and other community centres all across the Vancouver area. Janice specializes in creating digital comics inspired by Chinese ink and brush paintings. You can find her work at janiceliu.com.

Binding Book Basics with Cleopatria Peterson

12:30pm – 1:30pm Pacific Time in Room A at the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre.

Spice up your zines and comics with learning bookbinding techniques. This workshop will teach skills such as stab-binding and a simple saddle stitch so you can learn the basics and apply them to your future projects. No experience necessary and materials will be supplied. We will be working with sharp objects like awls and needles, so please use your discretion.

About Cleopatria

Cleopatria Peterson is a multidisciplinary artist that writes, printmakes, illustrates and loves self-publishing.Their work focuses on themes of nature, humour, identity and above all things, love. They graduated from Toronto Metropolitan University’s Fashion Communication program and are the medal winner for Cross-Disciplinary Arts: Publications at OCAD.They are a huge advocate for encouraging people from all backgrounds to make art.

Analog and Digital Risograph Printing with Jenn Woodall

3:30pm – 4:30pm in Room A at the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre.

Featured guest Jenn Woodall (Magical Beatdown, Space Trash) will take participants through making analog and digital risographs. She will also discuss her beginnings in self-publishing and zine making on a budget and the various lessons she has learned through her DIY journey. Participants are welcome to bring their laptops and ipads for the digital portion, however it’s not necessary as a take-home print out of how to digitally risograph will be provided.

About Jenn

Jenn Woodall is a cartoonist and illustrator living in Toronto, Ontario. She started out self-publishing her own comics and zines and has since had the majority of her work published by Silver Sprocket. Her latest graphic novel, ‘Space Trash,’ was published by Oni Press in September 2022. She has a BDes of Fashion Design as well as a BDes of Illustration from OCADU.
